Location and Geography

The Virgin Islands is located 40 miles east of Puerto Rico.
It is a cluster of over 50 islands and cays straddling the
Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It is 1,100 miles
southeast of Miami and 1,500 miles southeast of
New York.




							Island’s Size

								St. Croix is 84 square miles;
								St. Thomas is 32 square miles;
								St. John is 19 square miles;
								Water Islands is .76 square miles.





Population

The total population of the Virgin Islands is about 108,612.
St. Croix has about 53,234 inhabitants.
St. Thomas has about 51,020 inhabitants.
St. John has about 4,197 inhabitants.
Water Islands has about 161 inhabitants.


Culture & Language

Virgin Islanders are an exotic blend of African, Danish, French,
American, Puerto Rican, English, East Indian, Asian, Scottish,
and Portuguese. The official language is English, though with
a local dialect all on its own. You will also hear quite a bit of
Spanish and Patois (PA-twah).
The Virgin Islands is a colorful mix of Danish, Spanish, English,
Portuguese and African.





	Climate/Weather

80’s in the daytime and 70’s in most nights, with somewhat warmer and wetter summer months. Average rainfall is approximately 50 inches per year.

U.S. dollar, travel checks, major credit cards and some 
ATM cards are accepted by many businesses.


	Customs & Taxes

There are no customs duties, sales tax or luxury tax, though there is a nominal hotel tax. U.S. citizens are allowed a $1,600 duty-free allowance per person. U.S. residents 21 years of age or older are allowed 5 liters of liquor, provided one is made in the U.S. Virgin Islands, up to 100 cigars not of Cuban origin or 5 cartons of cigarettes.

Government
